Fines for speeding in the Czech Republic - Complete overview

From January 1, 2024, an amendment to the Road Act applies in the Czech Republic, which aims to simplify the entire system, to punish recidivists more and, on the contrary, to reduce penalties for trivial offenses. However, speeding is certainly not a banal offense.

Fine for speeding in town 🏢

If you exceed the speed limit in town by 10 km/h, you only face a fine. If you go even faster, you will also receive penalty points. If you exceed the speed limit of 40 km/h or more, you may also get a driving ban.

Fine for speeding on country roads or highways 🛣️

If you exceed the speed limit by 10 km/h outside the village, you only face a fine. If you go even faster, you will also receive penalty points. If you exceed the speed limit by 50 km/h or more, you may also get a driving ban.

What are penalty points?

In the Czech Republic, as in many other European systems, the so-called point system. For moderate and very serious traffic violations, the driver can receive 2, 4 or 6 penalty points.

If the driver gets 12 penalty points, the police will ban him from driving for one year. In the case of foreigners, the police is also authorized to confiscate the vehicle.
