🔢 What is a VIN code

VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-digit code that serves as a unique identifier of each and every vehicle manufactured. Not only do passenger cars have VINs, but so do motorbikes, buses, trailers and motorhomes. 

The VIN code can be found embossed in several compartments of the car. The location of the VIN is different for each make and model of car, but you will always find it mentioned in the vehicle documents (i.e., in the large and the small technical certificate). 

If you physically have the car or you have the car's documents, you can find its VIN easily. If you want to check a VIN of a car advertised for sale, copy the VIN listed in the ad or directly ask the dealer to provide you with its VIN. 

⚠️ Beware of fake adverts

Please note that there are numerous fake adverts on the internet offering attractive used cars at bargain prices. Often, however, these are fake adverts by which dealers try to lure customers into their shops and then sell them a completely different car.

✅ Verify the VIN code 

If possible, check that the VIN code specified in the vehicle documents or in the sale advert matches the VIN code physically embossed on the vehicle. If these two VINs differ, there is a high likelihood that the car has been stolen.
