🔢 What is the BMW VIN code composed of?

New Project (27) (1)

1. The first 3 characters of the BMW VIN are reserved for the manufacturer's code - when it comes to BMWs, these 3 digits most commonly are WBA

2. The 4th to 9th characters of the BMW VIN contain the vehicle description code. These digits encode general information about your BMW - its model, body, engine, production series, etc.

3. The last 8 characters express a unique serial number of the specific BMW. The last 4 digits of BMW VIN are always numbers, never letters.

Please beware that you will never find the letters O, I and Q in the BMW VIN code - these could be confused with the digits 0, 1 and 9.

🔍 Location of the BMW VIN code

The VIN code for BMW vehicles is most commonly found in the usual VIN locations directly on the vehicle or in vehicle documents:

  • Embossed on the bodywork in the engine compartment or in the luggage compartment.
  • On the nameplate by the front door or by the car pillars.
  • In the small technical certificate
  • In the large technical certificate
  • On the green card (car insurance document)

⚠️ BMW Used Car Scams

BMW cars are a very popular brand of used cars both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Due to their popularity, BMWs are a frequent target of fraud attempts. The most common scams include:

  • Falsification of car origin - for example, the car may be advertised as imported from Germany, when in reality, it comes from Eastern Europe.
  • Falsifying the year of manufacture - common with cars imported from abroad

We help you detect these frauds before your buy the car. Just type in the BMW VIN code into Cebia Car History and we will provide you with the car history.
