⚠️ Odometer rollback

This is the most common fraud committed by dealers of used vehicles. In contrast to most Western European countries, the Czech Republic does not have a public authority in place that would check vehicle mileage. Although the law classifies odometer rollbacks as a fraud, enforcing justice is almost impossible in practice. In fact, it is very difficult to prove that an odometer has been rolled back.

A profitable business for fraudsters

The practice of rolling back odometers is a profitable business for fraudsters. Its motivation is more than obvious - a car with lower mileage is always worth more. When buying a car with a rolled back odometer, the buyer will not only pay more than the car is actually worth, but may also be faced with significant additional costs for repairs.

German car can be a trap

It is no longer the case that buying a German (used) car guarantees good quality. Fraudsters know very well that checking the history of a car from the Czech Republic is easier than checking the history of a car from abroad. The risk of a rolled-up odometer is therefore much higher for foreign cars than it is for Czech cars. Some importers even sell cars after severe accidents, which they buy cheaply abroad and then repair cheaply (and often poorly).

Looking at the pedals or the steering wheel is not enough

You've probably heard that the actual mileage of a vehicle can be estimated, for example, by the condition of its interior - steering wheel, pedals or gear lever. Unfortunately, this is an old myth. The wear and tear of the interior is often more indicative of how the car has been used or the quality of its workmanship. The steering wheel, for example, can look rough even though it has got low mileage - it is enough if the driver wears rings, his hands are sweaty and the steering wheel is not cleaned. 

Worn parts are easy to replace.

Fraudsters try to increase the price of a car in every possible way. If they roll down the odometer, they don't forget to cover up other traces of high mileage. If a car has a worn steering wheel or a worn seat, they simply replace them with parts from another (e.g. wrecked) vehicle.

Verifying vehicle mileage by using the VIN number

The easiest way to check the vehicle mileage is to check the vehicle's history. The history of a car can be traced using its VIN code (more about the VIN code and its location on the car can be found here). By checking the vehicle's history, you can trace the historical records of the odometer. By comparing them to the vehicle's current status, you can then easily check the miles and detect any odometer rollbacks. 

In addition, a background check can also reveal hidden damage to the vehicle. It is not only in the Czech Republic that there are used cars after severe accidents which have been poorly repaired. Such used cars do not meet the safety standards set by the manufacturer and may not properly protect the crew in the event of a crash, and may even cause more harm to them.
