What is a VW VIN code?

Every Volkswagen car has its unique VIN code - this is a unique 17-digit code composed of letters and numbers. The VW VIN is a crucial source of information about an individual vehicle, as the vehicle is listed under a VIN code in all important, well-recognised vehicle databases, including:

  • VW manufacturer database
  • VW dealer database
  • VW service station database
  • State vehicle registry databases
  • Police databases
  • Insurance company databases
  • Databases of private car companies

🔢 What is the VW VIN code composed of?

New Project (27) (2)

  1. The first 3 characters of the VIN are reserved for the manufacturer's code. When it comes to Volkswagen vehicles, these 3 digits most commonly are WVW or VWG
  2. The 4th to 9th character of the VW VIN contain the vehicle description code. These digits encode general information about your VW - its model, body, engine, production series, etc.
  3. The 10th to 17th character express a unique serial number of the specific VW.

The last four characters of the VIN code must always be numbers, never letters. Please beware that you will never find the letters O, I and Q in the VW VIN code - as they could be confused with the digits 0, 1 and 9.
