What is a Volvo VIN?

Every Volvo produced has its own unique VIN code. The VIN is a unique 17-digit code made up of numbers and letters. It is an important source of information about each Volvo, as it is under this code that the vehicle is listed in all important databases:

  • Manufacturer databases of Volvo
  • Volvo new and used car dealers databases
  • Volvo repair shops databases (authorised and unauthorised)
  • National registers
  • Police databases
  • Databases of insurance companies
  • Database of private automotive companies

🔢 What does the Volvo VIN contain?

Volvo VIN decoder

1. The first three characters of the VIN
The first three characters are the vehicle manufacturer's code. In the case of Volvo, the code for most cars is YV1 (cars made in Sweden), but increasingly we will see the code LVY for Volvos made in China (the S90 is already made there for Europe).

2. Fourth to ninth character of the VIN
The next six characters are Volvo's descriptive code, which encodes general information about the vehicle - model, body type, engine type, production series, etc.

3. Tenth to seventeenth character of the VIN
The last eight characters are Volvo's unique production code. The last four characters must always be digits!

The Volvo VIN code must never contain the letters Q, I and O to avoid confusion with the numbers 9, 1 and 0.

🔍 Volvo VIN location

The VIN number of Volvo cars can be found in common places directly on the car or in related documentation:

  • VIN stamped on the body in the boot or engine compartment
  • On the type plate in the front door area
  • In the insurance documents

For more information on the location of the VIN, see the separate article Where to find the VIN.

⚠️ Used Volvo scams

If you want to buy a safe used car, you won't go wrong with a Volvo. Even so, buying an untested used car can burn you up, as even Volvos are not immune to classic scams:

  • Odometer rollback - especially for vehicles imported from abroad
  • Concealed previous damage - often even total crashes
  • Falsifying the country of origin of a vehicle
  • Falsifying the year of manufacture of a vehicle

Fortunately, fraud can usually be detected in time by checking the vehicle online.
