What is a Lexus VIN?

All Lexus cars produced have a unique VIN code, which is a 17-digit code made up of numbers and letters. The VIN code is an important source of information about each Lexus car, as it is the one under which the vehicle is listed in all important databases:

  • Databases of manufacturer Lexus
  • Databases of new and used Lexus dealers
  • Databases of Lexus service centres
  • National registers and databases
  • Police databases of stolen vehicles
  • Private databases of stolen vehicles
  • Databases of insurance companies
  • Databases of private automotive companies

🔢 What does the Lexus VIN contain? Lexus VIN decoder

1. The first three characters of the VIN
The first three characters are the manufacturer's WMI code. Lexus uses WMI codes JTJ and JTH (for vehicles made in Japan). Vehicles made in the USA (e.g. RX model) have WMI code 2T2.

2. Fourth to ninth character of the VIN
The six additional characters represent the Lexus descriptive code, which encodes general information about the car, such as model, body type, engine type, production series, etc.

3. Tenth to seventeenth character of the VIN
The last eight characters are the unique production code. The last four characters must always be digits!

The Lexus VIN must never contain the letters Q, I and O to avoid confusion with the numbers 9, 1 and 0.

⚠️ Used Lexus scams

Lexus cars used to be a rarity in Europe. Recently, however, they have become increasingly popular. That's why used car scammers are starting to take notice and are the most frequent target of these scams:

  • Odometer rollback - especially for imported second-hand vehicles
  • Concealed previous damage - these are often total crashes
  • Falsification of vehicle origin and age

Fortunately, fraud can usually be detected in time by checking the vehicle online.
