What is a Porsche VIN?

Every Porsche produced has its own unique VIN code, which is a 17-digit code made up of numbers and letters. The VIN code is an important source of information about each Porsche, as it is the one under which the vehicle is listed in all important databases:

  • Databases of Porsche manufacturer
  • Databases of new and used Porsche dealers
  • Databases of Porsche service centers
  • National vehicle registers
  • Police databases of stolen vehicles
  • Private databases of stolen vehicles

🔢 What does the Porsche VIN contain?Porsche VIN decoder

1. The first three characters of the VIN
The first three characters are the manufacturer's WMI code. Porsche uses WMI codes on its vehicles:
WP0 - for 911, Boxster, Panamera, Cayman
WP1 - for the Macan model
W1N - Taycan, Cayenne

2. Fourth to ninth character of the VIN
The six additional characters are the Porsche descriptive code, which encodes general information about the vehicle such as model, body type, engine type, production series, etc.

3. Tenth to seventeenth character of the VIN
The last eight characters are the unique Porsche production code. The last four characters must always be digits!

The Porsche VIN must never contain the letters Q, I and O to avoid confusion with the numbers 9, 1 and 0.

⚠️ Porsche used car scams

Porsche is a very luxurious car company, unfortunately, even these vehicles are not exempt from scammers. On the contrary, they like to target Porsches because the potential profit for them is many times greater than for mainstream brands. Fraudsters can easily make hundreds of thousands or even millions of crowns. The most common scams on Porsche vehicles are:

  • Odometer rollback - especially for used vehicles imported from abroad
  • Concealed previous damage - these are often total crashes
  • Falsifying the age and origin of a vehicle

Fortunately, fraud can usually be detected in time by checking the vehicle online.
